77-Year-Old Woman Allegedly Shoots Man in Groin After He Jokes About It
By Jennifer A.. Mar 7, 2025
A joke turned fatal in Cincinnati, Ohio when a 77-year-old woman shot a man in the groin, thinking the gun wasn’t loaded. Now, Kathleen Geiger faces a reckless homicide charge after allegedly pulling the trigger on 58-year-old Arthur Osborne - an act she claims was all in good fun.
A Deadly Sense of Humor
The bizarre incident unfolded on Oct. 20, 2024, inside a Cincinnati apartment. As reported by PEOPLE, according to court documents, Geiger and Osborne exchanged what she described as “harmless banter” before he jokingly asked her to shoot him. Instead of laughing it off, she allegedly picked up a gun, aimed at his pelvic region, and fired.
Authorities say Geiger insisted she didn’t know the gun had a bullet inside. But that explanation didn’t carry much weight in court.
A Call for Help That Came Too Late
After the gun went off, Geiger attempted to save Osborne, providing medical aid before calling 911. When first responders arrived, they found Osborne unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police arrested Geiger and charged her with reckless homicide, a third-degree felony that could land her in prison for up to 36 months.
‘No Excuse,’ Prosecutors Say
In court the following day, prosecutors made it clear they weren’t buying Geiger’s story.
“Everyone who possesses a firearm has a responsibility to do it responsibly,” one prosecutor said, according to WLWT 5. “You never point a firearm at anything and pull the trigger unless you intend to destroy it.” The prosecutor continued by stating that her thinking the gun was not loaded was “no excuse.”
The judge set Geiger’s bond at $10,000, which she posted. This case is ongoing.
When a Joke Becomes a Crime
Geiger’s case serves as a grim reminder that guns and jokes don’t mix. A moment of reckless decision-making ended in tragedy, proving that even so-called “harmless banter” can have deadly consequences.
