86-Year-Old Man Vanishes in Costa Rica

A Routine Trip Takes a Mysterious Turn

Widicker and his wife joined Maranatha Volunteers International, a Christian humanitarian group, to paint churches and schools in Costa Rica.

On Nov. 8, 2001, the group visited the Tabacon Resort in Tabacon Hot Springs.

While his wife waded in the hot springs, Widicker, who was hard of hearing and wore hearing aids, waited on a bench nearby. When she returned after 30 minutes, Widicker was gone.

The Search Begins

Witnesses reported seeing Widicker walk away from the parking lot along a public road. Initially, this did not raise alarms as guests often strolled to nearby hot springs. However, security guards recalled Widicker asking for directions and seeking permission to leave the resort, despite the pouring rain. This behavior was out of character for Widicker, who was not known for wandering off alone.
