American Airlines Passenger Takes Off Shirt, Drags Flight Attendant Down Aisle
By Nikki Thrace. Jun 21, 2025
An American Airlines flight turned into a scene of chaos on May 27 when a passenger allegedly launched a violent outburst, prompting an emergency diversion and federal charges. The incident has sparked national headlines, raising questions about in-flight safety and mental health in the air.
‘Help Me’ and a Sudden Attack at 30,000 Feet
The flight had departed from Bradley International Airport in Hartford, Connecticut, en route to Chicago. According to CBS News, about 30 to 60 minutes after takeoff, 24-year-old Kansas man Julius Jordan Priester suddenly stood up, began removing his shirt, and ran to the back of the plane while shouting, “Help me.”
The DOJ stated that Priester then approached a seated flight attendant and shouted, “You’re coming with me,” before allegedly dragging the attendant to the ground and attempting to pull them up the aisle, according to CBS News. Several passengers and other flight attendants intervened to restrain Priester and return him to his seat.
Despite their efforts, Priester continued to behave erratically, making incoherent statements, and disturbing the cabin environment. The situation was serious enough that the pilot declared an emergency and diverted the plane back to Bradley International Airport.
Emergency Diversion and Arrest
Once the plane landed safely, Connecticut State Police removed Priester from the aircraft. He was then transported by ambulance to a local hospital for evaluation. According to PEOPLE, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Connecticut State Police are currently investigating the incident.
Priester made a court appearance before a magistrate judge in Hartford, Connecticut, and remains in custody awaiting a bond hearing. According to CBS News, he has been charged with interfering with flight crew members and attendants - a federal charge that carries a maximum sentence of up to 20 years in prison.
Airline Responds to Shocking Mid-Flight Incident
American Airlines responded to the incident with a statement addressing the severity of the attack, saying it does “not tolerate violence,” according to CBS News. “We thank our team members for their professionalism and our customers for their assistance.”
This is not the first time an American Airlines flight has made headlines due to disruptive behavior. In a separate incident just weeks prior, another plane had to turn around after a passenger became angry over a meal selection and seating arrangement.
What’s Next for the Case?
Meanwhile, authorities continue to investigate the incident to determine whether any additional charges may be appropriate. The case serves as a stark reminder of the potential volatility in the air - and the need for swift action by crew members and fellow passengers.
