California Man Killed in Thailand After Refusing to Move On
By Alex Morgan. Jun 2, 2026
Stein Heath Cole, a 54-year-old man from California, was beaten to death on the streets of Bangkok, Thailand, in February 2026 – allegedly attacked by his ex-girlfriend’s current boyfriend and three other men after he refused to accept the end of their relationship.
Who Was Stein Heath Cole?
Stein Heath Cole, 54, was a California resident who had traveled to Bangkok. His death sent a wave of grief through those who knew him, and serves as a reminder to Americans traveling abroad of the unpredictable dangers that can arise from personal conflict.
What Happened
On February 16, 2026, Cole went to confront his ex-girlfriend, Nan Phawt Ar Cho, 24, in Bangkok. He pleaded with her to reconcile.
Her current boyfriend, Saw Nay Lin Oo, 26, was present – along with three other men. According to Thai authorities, Cole produced a knife during the confrontation, which the group used as justification to attack him.
Cole was found on the pavement afterward with both legs broken and five stab wounds. A 10-inch knife and a metal pipe were recovered at the scene. He was pronounced dead.
Arrests and Charges
All four men – Saw Nay Lin Oo and three others – were charged by Thai police with jointly assaulting another person causing death.
Thai authorities noted that Cole had been following his ex-girlfriend “continuously” in the days prior to the attack.
U.S. Embassy officials in Bangkok were notified of Cole’s death and are assisting his family.
A Warning for Travelers Abroad
The U.S. State Department maintains travel advisories for destinations worldwide. The Cole case is a sobering reminder that personal disputes, wherever they occur, can escalate into tragedy – and that the consequences of unresolved grief can follow travelers far from home.
His family is working with U.S. consular officials regarding the repatriation of his remains.
