On Feb. 24, 2023, Juliana Peres Magalhaes, 24, allegedly shot a man inside her host family’s Virginia home, sparking confusion and fear throughout the quiet neighborhood. She had joined the Banfield family in late 2021 through Brazil’s au pair exchange program, but when police arrived, they uncovered evidence pointing to something far more complex than a simple altercation. What initially appeared to be a tragic outburst soon became the focus of a deeper investigation.

A Deadly Affair and a Sinister Plot Unfold

Juliana Peres Magalhaes and Brendan Banfield thought they crafted a perfect alibi. The story they told police suggested that a stranger, Joseph Ryan, had been lured to the Banfield home for a sexual encounter gone wrong. In the aftermath, Christine Banfield, a pediatric nurse and devoted mother, lay dead from stab wounds to her neck. Her husband Brendan and the au pair, Magalhaes, insisted they’d acted in self-defense, claiming they shot Christine’s “attacker” in the heat of the moment.
