Arizona Dancer Was Killed the Day She Was Set to Testify

Who Was Mercedes Vega?

Mercedes Vega, 22, was a dancer at a Phoenix-area club who had been targeted in a robbery in 2020. She cooperated with law enforcement and was set to serve as a witness in the resulting criminal case.

Her colleagues at the club had grown fearful in the months before her death. Dancers told reporters they believed someone was watching them – that they were being targeted. Their fears proved tragically correct.

On the morning of April 17, 2023 – the day of the robbery trial – Mercedes did not appear to testify. She was already gone.

Her body was found that afternoon in a burning car on a highway west of Phoenix. She had been shot, beaten, and burned.

The Charges and Guilty Verdict

Cudjoe Young, 29, stands charged with murdering Vega, as well as with her kidnapping, arson, and related offenses. He and co-defendants Jared Gray and Sencere Hayes have pleaded not guilty to the murder charges.

In a separate trial focused on the 2020 robbery of Vega – the incident that first put her on Young’s radar – a jury found Young guilty of armed robbery and attempted armed robbery.

Prosecutors argued that Young robbed Vega three years before he allegedly killed her, and that the murder was carried out to silence her testimony.

Mercedes’s mother has been present throughout the legal proceedings and has spoken publicly about her daughter’s death. She has said her daughter was doing the right thing by cooperating with police – and was killed for it.
