Chicago Man Claims 'Satan Made Him' Kill His Mom
By Ashley S.. Feb 19, 2025
A mentally ill Chicago man, Joseph Nerone, was accused of brutally murdering his mother, Elaine Nerone, in a shocking crime with an even more troubling motive. At the time of the incident, Joseph was 54, and Elaine was 84. The case has drawn attention not only for its violent nature but also for the disturbing explanation Joseph offered to police: HuffPost reported that he claimed that “Satan was inside him” and responsible for the attack.
Caught Red-Handed
On Friday, March 30, 2012, police discovered Elaine Nerone’s lifeless body in the Northwest Side Dunning neighborhood home she shared with her son. The discovery came after Joseph failed to appear at a scheduled meeting with his probation officer, prompting concern and leading officers to check the residence. Inside, they found Elaine’s body on the bathroom floor, showing evidence of multiple stab wounds and blunt force trauma.
Joseph was found nearby, covered in blood and with injuries consistent with a struggle. Police recovered several bloody knives from the scene. Under questioning, Joseph told investigators, “Satan killed the victim and Satan was inside him,” according to prosecutors as reported by HuffPost.
From God Complex to Satan’s Pawn
Neighbors expressed little surprise at the tragic event. Patrick Hyland Jr., who lives nearby, described Joseph’s long history of erratic and violent behavior. “We all knew it was only a matter of time,” Hyland said according to CBS News, noting that police had been called to the home over 20 times in the past year. After her husband’s death four years earlier, Elaine reportedly struggled to manage her son’s increasingly volatile behavior.

Court records reveal that Joseph had a prior conviction for battery in 2011. During that incident, he declared himself to be “God” before assaulting a neighbor. He was initially deemed unfit to stand trial but later underwent treatment and was sentenced to 18 months of court supervision. His public defender cited a history of mental health issues during his initial hearing, leading Judge James Brown to order a psychological evaluation.
Could Elaine Have Been Saved?
While the murder has left the local community horrified, it has also raised questions about whether enough was done to address Joseph’s mental health struggles before they escalated to such a violent end. Neighbors recall a history of warning signs and interventions that seemingly fell short of protecting Elaine. In the end, Joseph Nerone was charged with one count of first-degree murder.
This case also sheds light on the growing mental health crisis in the United States. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), an estimated 59.3 million adults in the United States (23.1%) experienced a mental illness in the past year. Many, like Joseph Nerone, may go untreated or struggle to access adequate resources. This unsettling event highlights the importance of early intervention and comprehensive mental health care for the individuals affected and for the safety and well-being of those around them.
