Daughter Killed Parents, Lived With Their Bodies 4 Years
By Jessie Stone. Jun 8, 2025
Neighbors believed Virginia McCullough was just a quiet woman caring for her elderly parents. For four years, she maintained that illusion - until police uncovered a horror story straight out of a crime novel.
The Crime Behind Closed Doors
Virginia McCullough’s crimes came to light in September 2023 when her parents’ doctor raised concerns. John McCullough, 70, and Lois McCullough, 71, had not been seen in years. When Essex police conducted a welfare check at their home, they discovered both had been dead since June 2019.
They were apparently mummified.
John had allegedly been poisoned with prescription medications, while Lois had been bludgeoned with a hammer and stabbed multiple times.
Police say Virginia made elaborate efforts to conceal the murders. Her father’s body was placed in a homemade tomb in the bedroom, disguised as a bed, while her mother’s corpse was wrapped in a sleeping bag and stuffed into a wardrobe. She reportedly told police, “I know why you’re here. My father is in there. I murdered him,” according to the Sun.
A Life Built on Lies
Authorities say McCullough meticulously wove a web of deception. She lied to relatives, sent holiday cards in her parents’ names, canceled family events, and posed as her mother during phone calls. Throughout the pandemic and beyond, she manipulated doctors, police, and financial institutions. According to prosecutors, she continued living in the house while spending nearly £150,000 of her parents’ money - including over £21,000 on gambling.
Her actions not only allowed her to maintain the illusion that her parents were still alive, but also to benefit financially from their deaths.
The Sister Speaks
Louise Hopkins, Virginia’s older sister, had become estranged from the family in 2018 due to reported issues with their father’s drinking and their mother’s controlling behavior. In media interviews, Louise said she had forgiven her sister but struggled with overwhelming guilt and grief. “The worst thing is that my parents were left to rot,” she told The Sun. “The grief has haunted me.”
Louise never attended the trial and has no intention of visiting Virginia in prison. Speaking on the Speakmans Hope Clinic podcast, she shared how the trauma triggered obsessive-compulsive behaviors and emotional distress. “I will never forget them,” she said of her parents, according to LadBible. “I loved them, but I didn’t like them.”
A Chilling Sentence
On Oct. 11, 2024, Virginia McCullough was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 36 years before parole eligibility. She pleaded guilty to the murders, and during police bodycam footage released to the public, she reportedly stated, “Cheer up - at least you’ve caught the bad guy,” according to the Sun.
The case, though resolved in court, leaves behind questions about how such crimes went undetected for so long and how someone could maintain such an elaborate facade for years. While the legal chapter has closed, the emotional and psychological impact on surviving family members continues.
A Family’s Tragedy, A Nation’s Horror
Virginia McCullough’s crimes shocked a nation. They challenged assumptions about family, deception, and grief. As Louise Hopkins tries to build a life of peace for herself and her children, the story of what happened behind closed doors in Chelmsford stands as a grim reminder that sometimes, the most horrifying secrets are hiding in plain sight.
