Trump Jr. Caught in Italian Hunting Scandal
By Ashley S.. Mar 3, 2025
Italian politicians and environmentalists are expressing outrage following allegations that Donald Trump Jr. participated in a hunting expedition near Venice that resulted in the death of a protected ruddy shelduck. The incident has sparked calls for legal action and intensified debates over hunting regulations in Italy. One Italian newspaper referred to the controversy as the “Donald Duck crisis.”
Video Evidence and Allegations
The controversy began when a video surfaced on the Field Ethos website, a platform co-founded by Trump Jr., showcasing a hunting trip in the Valle Pierimpiè wetlands adjacent to the Venice Lagoon. The footage shows scenes of hunters in camouflage waiting for their prey, sweeping views of the water, and trained bird dogs in action. Amid the hunt, Trump Jr. is seen standing among deceased birds and describing them.
In the video, he acknowledges that one of the ducks is uncommon to the area, later identified as the ruddy shelduck, a migratory species from Asia that is rare in Europe. He expresses excitement over the kill but seems uncertain about the bird’s English name, calling the experience an “incredible shoot,” as reported by CNN.
Ruddy shelducks are protected under European Union and Italian law. Killing or possessing this bird is considered a criminal offense in Italy. Andrea Zanoni, a regional councilor from the northern Italian Veneto region, highlighted the gravity of the situation, stating that the act constitutes a crime and questioning the legality of Trump Jr.’s hunting activities in the region.
Trump Jr.’s Media Response
In response to the allegations, a spokesperson for Trump Jr., Andy Surabian, asserted that the hunting party possessed all necessary permits and operated within a legally sanctioned area frequented by numerous other hunting groups. Surabian emphasized Trump Jr.’s commitment to adhering to hunting regulations and conservation practices, noting his intention to fully cooperate with any ensuing investigation.
Calls for Legal Action and Stricter Regulations
Zanoni has urged Italy’s environment minister to take action, stating that Trump Jr. could face criminal charges for hunting without a license. He emphasized that hunting licenses in Italy are issued only to regional residents and must document the date, location, and number of animals killed by species.
Additionally, Italy’s Greens and Left Alliance (AVS) political party filed a similar complaint with the country’s environment minister, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin. Questions have also been raised regarding the legality of non-residents hunting in Italy, as hunting is strictly regulated.

Broader Implications for Wildlife Protection
This event has reignited discussions about hunting practices, wildlife protection, and the enforcement of conservation laws in Italy. As the investigation unfolds, it remains to be seen what legal repercussions, if any, Trump Jr. and his associates may face concerning the alleged killing of the protected ruddy shelduck.
