Stef Jones, known affectionately as the “bike geezer,” embarked on a mission almost two years ago to create a business that does more than just sell bicycles; it rebuilds lives.

By employing ex-offenders, XO Bikes tackles the daunting 18-billion-pound problem of those released from prison reoffending in the UK head-on. Jones’ journey from a successful career in advertising to a devoted prison chaplaincy volunteer laid the foundation for XO Bikes. Frustrated with the cycle of reoffending, Jones decided to take action by offering jobs to those whom society often overlooks.

Training for a New Beginning

XO Bikes stands out for its mission and its method. The enterprise sources its bikes from police stocks of unclaimed, stolen bicycles, transforming them into stylish rides while doing the same for the lives of those involved in the refurbishment process. Trainees undergo a six-week Velotech course, an industry standard for bike maintenance, and receive support for travel and meal expenses, ensuring a holistic approach to rehabilitation.

Success Stories

The impact of XO Bikes is evident in the stories of its trainees. Program participant Darrell Collins left prison and finished the course in February 2022. Positive News reports that since graduating, he has gone on to work as a cargo bike deliverer, “It’s given me a sense of purpose and a sense of community, which is what I’ve been missing all the time I was offending.”
