Starbucks is officially ending its open-door policy, meaning restrooms, patios, and indoor seating areas are now reserved only for paying customers, employees, and those accompanying a paying customer.

This change reverses a 2018 policy that allowed non-paying guests to use Starbucks facilities, which was implemented after an incident where two Black men were arrested in Philadelphia for not ordering anything. The company apologized, implemented racial bias training, and opened its doors to everyone. Now, it’s walking that decision back, saying it wants to prioritize paying customers.
