The Initial Claim

On Aug. 14, 2016, Ryan Lochte reported that he and three other U.S. swimmers were robbed at gunpoint by individuals posing as police officers. Lochte’s account painted a picture of athletes in distress, victimized while representing their country.

“We got pulled over, in the taxi, and these guys came out with a badge, a police badge, no lights, no nothing just a police badge and they pulled us over,” Lochte said, as reported by TIME. “They pulled out their guns, they told the other swimmers to get down on the ground - they got down on the ground. I refused, I was like, ‘We didn’t do anything wrong, so - I’m not getting down on the ground.’”

The Investigation Begins

As authorities delved into Lochte’s claims, inconsistencies began to surface. Authorities grew suspicious when they were unable to find the taxi driver to corroborate the details of that night. Surveillance footage obtained from the gas station where the alleged robbery took place surfaced and contradicted Lochte’s version of events. The footage showed the swimmers engaging in an altercation with security guards after vandalizing the gas station’s restroom. It became evident that Lochte’s story was far from the truth.

The Unraveling of Lies

Under mounting pressure, Lochte admitted to fabricating the robbery story. He confessed that he had exaggerated the events after a night of heavy drinking. The truth was that the swimmers had been confronted by security guards for their behavior and vandalism they caused. According to various reports, the swimmers paid between $20-50 for the damages on the spot. Additionally, swimmer Jimmy Feigen later agreed to make a donation to charity of 35,000 reales ($10,800) before leaving the country to avoid minor charges.

The Consequences

The fallout from Lochte’s false claims was swift and severe. The United States Olympic Committee (USOC) and USA Swimming suspended Lochte for 10 months. The suspension included a ban from domestic and international USA Swimming national team competitions, making him ineligible for the 2017 FINA World Championships.

During his suspension, Lochte would not receive a monthly stipend from USA Swimming or the USOC and would have no access to training centers or facilities of the USOC. He also forfeited all USOC and USA Swimming medal funding for his gold medal at the 2016 Olympic Games^®.

On Aug. 19, following the incident’s escalation into a global controversy, the six-time Olympic gold medalist issued a public apology on Instagram.
