British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran, known for his global hits like “Shape of You,” faced an unexpected interruption during a surprise street performance in Bengaluru, India. While the Grammy-winning artist was busking on Church Street, a bustling area of the city, local police intervened and abruptly ended his performance, claiming he lacked official permission. The incident, captured on video and widely shared on social media, left fans stunned and sparked a debate over bureaucracy and street performance regulations.

A Spontaneous Gig - Or a Planned Show?

Sheeran, currently on tour in India, decided to treat his fans to an impromptu busking session in Bengaluru ahead of his scheduled concert. However, what seemed like a casual street performance quickly turned controversial when police officers stepped in mid-song, unplugging Sheeran’s microphone and cutting the music short.

According to Bengaluru’s Deputy Commissioner of Police, Shekhar H. Tekkannavar, Sheeran’s request to perform on Church Street had been denied due to the area’s high pedestrian traffic. Authorities stated that they aim to prevent congestion in one of the city’s busiest zones. “We rejected it because Church Street is a very busy area and we try to keep the people moving there,” Tekkannavar told CNN.

However, Sheeran contradicted the authorities’ claims, insisting on Instagram that he had been granted permission to busk in that exact spot. “We had permission to busk,” he wrote, according to CNN. Sheeran added that the performance had been planned rather than a random pop-up event.

Fan Reactions: Outrage and Support

The dramatic shutdown of Sheeran’s performance quickly went viral, with fans expressing mixed reactions online. One concertgoer, who happened to stumble upon the gig, posted on X (formerly Twitter), “Went for a casual walk on Church Street and stumbled upon Ed Sheeran performing live,” as reported by CNN. “What a city!”

While some criticized local authorities for their rigid enforcement, arguing that an artist of Sheeran’s stature performing for free was an opportunity, others supported the police’s decision. Indian lawmaker PC Mohan weighed in, stating, “Even global stars must follow local rules-no permit, no performance,” according to Euro News.

India’s Rising Live Music Scene

Despite the incident, Sheeran remains a hugely popular artist in India. His concerts in the country have sold out consistently, with a growing demand for international live performances. Recent tours by Coldplay and Dua Lipa have further fueled the rise of live music culture in India.

Sheeran is scheduled to perform two more shows in India before heading to China and the UAE as part of his ongoing tour. Whether this busking blunder will impact future street performances in India remains to be seen, but one thing is clear - his fans are always eager for a surprise appearance, legal or not.
