How NASA® and SpaceX® Finally Brought 2 Astronauts Home After 286 Days
By Gary P.. Apr 4, 2025
A Galactic Glitch: How 2 Astronauts Got Stuck in Space
Imagine heading out for a week-long trip only to find yourself stranded for nine months - with no way home. That’s exactly what happened to NASA® astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, who launched to the International Space Station (ISS) in June 2024 on what was meant to be a quick test mission aboard Boeing’s® Starliner capsule. But when propulsion issues grounded their return plans, their short trip turned into an extended stay in orbit.
NASA eventually decided to fold Wilmore and Williams into its regular ISS crew rotation, but not everyone was happy about that decision. As the months dragged on, political tensions on Earth heated up, with some claiming the astronauts had been “abandoned” due to bureaucratic red tape, as reported by Daily Mail. Others pointed to safety concerns and financial constraints as the real reason behind the delay. Whatever the cause, the two astronauts were left watching Earth from above, waiting for a way home.
A Rescue Mission … or 2 … or 3
Rescue attempts proved to be a saga of their own. SpaceX’s Crew Dragon was ultimately chosen as the vehicle to bring the astronauts home, but getting a mission off the ground was easier said than done. A high-profile launch attempt in early March 2025 ended in disappointment when a faulty clamp arm forced NASA and SpaceX® to scrub the mission at the last minute.
“Standing down from tonight’s launch opportunity,” SpaceX announced, as reported by the Daily Beast, leaving Wilmore and Williams stuck in space yet again.
The delay fueled even more political finger-pointing. President Donald Trump and his close ally Elon Musk blamed the Biden administration, with Trump claiming, according to the Daily Beast, “Biden was embarrassed by what happened, and he said ‘Leave them up there’.”
NASA, however, consistently refuted those claims, maintaining that safety and logistics - not politics - dictated mission timelines.
Touchdown at Last!
Finally, after a staggering 286 days in space, Wilmore and Williams finally strapped into SpaceX’s Crew Dragon for their long-overdue journey home. At 5:57 p.m. EST on March 18, 2025, the capsule splashed down safely off the coast of Florida. Cheers erupted in mission control, and photos soon emerged of the astronauts smiling in stretchers as they underwent routine health checks.
NASA hailed the mission’s success, but the political controversy continued. While Trump and Musk claimed credit for expediting the rescue, critics argued that NASA had already planned to return the astronauts with Crew-9’s mission long before any political intervention.
Regardless of the politics, one thing is certain: Wilmore and Williams’ unexpected nine-month mission showcased the resilience of astronauts, the unpredictability of space travel, and the never-ending drama of Earthly affairs.
