How One Woman Scammed $28K in Gas From a Glitch
By Melissa M.. Aug 5, 2024
For over six months, a Nebraska woman found herself at the center of an elaborate scheme to get free gas. By exploiting a glitch at a local gas station, she managed to pump nearly $28,000 worth of fuel without paying a dime. This remarkable story ended with her arrest and charges of felony theft, bringing a swift end to her fuel-filled escapade.
A Clever Exploit
The incident began at the Pump & Pantry gas station in Lincoln, Nebraska, where a software update introduced an unintended flaw. By double-swiping a rewards card, the pump would enter “demo” mode, allowing users to pump gas for free. Authorities discovered that Dawn Thompson, the 45-year-old woman at the center of this case, took full advantage of this glitch from November 2022 until the following June.
The Extent of the Scam
During this period, Thompson’s rewards card was used over 500 times, resulting in more than 7,400 gallons of gas being pumped for free. The total cost to the station was calculated at nearly $28,000. What was not immediately clear was how Thompson needed that much gas in seven months.
The scam didn’t just benefit Thompson alone; she also charged another individual $500 to use her card for approximately $700 worth of gas.

Discovery and Arrest
The scheme came to light when the gas station’s loss-prevention manager noticed the unusual activity associated with one particular rewards card. Following this discovery, video surveillance confirmed Thompson’s repeated visits to the station. She was arrested on March 6 and charged with felony theft.
Legal Consequences
This case highlights the potential legal consequences of exploiting technological glitches for personal gain. While Thompson might have thought she found a clever way to save on fuel costs, the reality of facing felony theft charges underscores the serious repercussions of such actions. The gas station has since fixed the glitch, ensuring no further exploitation can occur.
Dawn Thompson’s story serves as a cautionary tale about the perils of exploiting technological flaws. Her quest for free gas ultimately led to significant legal trouble, proving once again that there truly is no such thing as a free lunch - or free gas.
