How Tim Allen Went From Drug Trafficker to TV's Favorite Dad

Before Tim Allen became a beloved sitcom dad and the voice of Buzz Lightyear, he was facing the possibility of life in prison. The actor, best known for “Home Improvement” and “The Santa Clause,” has been open about his troubled past - one that nearly derailed his future before it even began.

A Tragic Start and a Downward Spiral

Born in Denver, Colorado, in 1953, Allen (born Timothy Dick) had a difficult childhood. He turned to alcohol at a young age, later admitting he was drinking regularly by the time he was 10 because he was “inspired by watching cowboy movies that showed men riding horses and drinking whiskey,” according to PEOPLE. Then, when he was just 11 years old, his father was killed in a car accident. The loss devastated him. “I loved my father more than anything,” Allen later said, according to Far Out Magazine. His family relocated to Michigan, and his mother remarried, while Allen struggled to cope, which only fueled his drinking problem.

Opening up about his childhood on the “WTF with Marc Maron” podcast, Allen said, “After my old man died, I really just played games with people and told adults what they wanted to hear and then stole their booze,” PEOPLE reported.

During his college years at Western Michigan University, Allen fell deeper into substance abuse and eventually began dealing drugs. What started as a way to support himself quickly escalated into a high-stakes operation.

The 1978 Drug Bust

On Oct. 2, 1978, Allen’s life changed forever. He was arrested at Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport in Michigan with over 650 grams of cocaine. At the time, Michigan had recently passed a law mandating a life sentence for anyone caught with that amount or more. The situation seemed dire, but Allen managed to cut a deal.

Allen cooperated with authorities, providing information that led to multiple indictments and the conviction of four major drug traffickers. As a result, instead of life behind bars, he was sentenced in federal court and received three to seven years. Due to good behavior, he served just two years and four months at the Federal Correctional Institution in Sandstone, Minnesota, before being released in 1981.

Prison Changed Everything

Allen has spoken candidly about how prison forced him to face reality. “I just shut up and did what I was told,” he told Maron of his time in jail, according to PEOPLE. “It was the first time ever I did what I was told … I learned literally how to live day by day. And I learned how to shut up. You definitely want to learn how to shut up.”

Despite the harsh conditions, he slowly adapted. “I don’t say this lightly and anybody who has been incarcerated (knows), it’s surprising what the human being will get used to,” he added, according to PEOPLE. “Eventually after eight months, I got used to it.”

A Second Chance

After his release, Allen was determined to turn his life around. He found work at an advertising agency by day and pursued stand-up comedy at night. Performing at Detroit’s Comedy Castle, he honed the skills that would eventually launch his career. His talent led to commercials, which caught the attention of ABC.

In 1991, Home Improvement premiered, making Allen a household name. Over the years, he has built a career filled with blockbuster movies, hit TV shows, and a reputation as one of Hollywood’s most bankable comedic actors.

Now more than 20 years sober, Allen acknowledges his past, and admits that he is “grateful” for his sobriety. “I love my life,” he said on the podcast, according to PEOPLE.

He may have spent time behind bars, but he certainly nailed his home improvement. From a prison cell to primetime success, this once-wayward funnyman turned his life around, proving that sometimes the best punchlines come after the hardest lessons.
