Wife Lured to Her Death by Husband Already Serving Time for Murder

Egypt Carter, 23, was shot and killed in a parking lot in Dale City, Virginia, in the early hours of February 2, 2024. She had been led there under the pretense of picking up prescription medication for her husband.

Carter grew up in Bowie, Maryland, and was living in North Carolina at the time of her death. Her husband, Lionel Carter III, was already serving a prison sentence for the fatal shooting of a previous girlfriend when investigators say he arranged the ambush.

On March 26, 2026, a Prince William County jury convicted Grorethas McKinnon Jr., 29, of second-degree murder for his role in the killing. A second man, Drew Buchanan, had previously pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in March 2025 and awaits sentencing.

Who Egypt Carter Was

Egypt Carter grew up in Bowie, Maryland, where she was senior class president at Charles Herbert Flowers High School. She earned a scholarship to attend Bennett College in North Carolina, graduating in three years.

By the time of her death, she was running a small business and living in North Carolina. Her parents told NBC4 Washington they were stunned when they learned their daughter had married - and that her husband was incarcerated.

Egypt had told her mother she wanted out of the marriage. Her mother said she knew her daughter was afraid.

"Egypt could illuminate a room," her mother said. "She just had that gift."

The Plot Investigators Uncovered

According to prosecutors, Lionel Carter orchestrated the murder from inside Sussex State Prison, where he was serving time for the 2014 killing of 19-year-old Kadijah Stewart, a previous girlfriend.

Investigators say Carter connected with McKinnon while incarcerated and arranged for him and Buchanan to carry out the hit in exchange for payment.

Egypt was told she was driving to Woodbridge to pick up her husband's medication. She shared her GPS location via a messaging app as she drove, unaware she was being tracked by the men waiting for her.

When she arrived at the Orchard Mills apartment complex just after 2 a.m., she was shot multiple times through the driver's side window of her car. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

A small dog found unharmed in the vehicle was turned over to animal control.

Two Convictions, One Trial Still Ahead

McKinnon was found guilty on March 26, 2026, by a Prince William County jury. He faces up to 40 years in prison at sentencing, scheduled for July 2.

Buchanan, who pleaded guilty to first-degree murder, faces a maximum sentence of life in prison. His sentencing is set for June 12.

Lionel Carter III, the alleged architect of the plot, is scheduled to face trial on an aggravated murder charge beginning April 27, 2026.

"This was a tragic loss for the family of Egypt Carter," Prince William County Commonwealth's Attorney Amy Ashworth said in a statement, according to WTOP. "We are grateful that the jury understood what really happened in this case."

A Family Waiting for Full Accountability

Egypt's parents have followed every court date since their daughter's death. They described a young woman full of potential whose life was cut short by a man she had tried to leave.

The case drew attention to the dangers faced by people attempting to exit relationships with controlling or abusive partners - including those whose partners are incarcerated and operating through outside associates.

Lionel Carter's trial in late April will mark the next chapter in a case that Egypt's family has said they will see through to the end.
