The bizarre chain of events began in the early morning hours of Oct. 27, 2024, when 28-year-old Lindsay Houck allegedly stole a 2006 Jeep Cherokee from a gas station near the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office. According to reports, a witness saw Houck jump into the idling vehicle and drive off.

Houck’s getaway took a strange turn when the stolen Jeep entered the Sheriff’s Office complex, where it reportedly sped across the lawn and crashed into a fire hydrant. Despite the chaotic scene, Houck managed to drive off again. Police say the vehicle became disabled shortly after, near the Center for Discovery, due to a blown tire. Deputies quickly apprehended Houck, who was charged with grand larceny, criminal possession of stolen property, and driving while intoxicated, all felonies.

In a press release, the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office explained that Houck was released shortly after her arrest. “Under New York’s bail reform law, Houck was issued an appearance ticket and released,” the statement read, according to the Hudson Valley Post.

Less than 24 hours later, on Oct. 28, 2024, Houck allegedly found herself in trouble again. Around 8:15 a.m., deputies responded to a report of a woman attempting to steal a car at King’s Auto in Monticello. When officers arrived, they found Houck in the driver’s seat of a 1964 Chevrolet pickup truck, allegedly trying to start it. Deputies quickly arrested her at the scene.

This time, Houck was charged with felony grand larceny and misdemeanor trespassing. Unlike her previous arrest, Houck did not walk free. She was arraigned before Judge Sharon Jankiewicz in the Town of Thompson court and remanded to the Sullivan County Jail on $5,000 bail.

Houck’s rapid-fire arrests have sparked local discussion about New York’s bail reform laws, which aim to reduce pretrial detention for nonviolent offenses.
