Justice in Pueblo: Solomon Martinez Convicted in Grisly Killing of Renee Portillos
By Jessie Stone. Apr 10, 2025
When Pueblo, Colorado, officers responded to a call on the afternoon of Jan. 10, 2024, they likely weren’t prepared for what lay ahead: the partial remains of a 47-year-old woman discovered in the water - and a trail that would lead to a man carrying something horrifying in his jacket pocket. That man was Solomon Martinez, a 27-year-old security guard who, prosecutors argued, not only killed Renee Portillos but went to disturbing lengths to conceal what he had done.
What Was Found at the Creek
Portillos’s body was found in Fountain Creek, south of Highway 47 in Pueblo after a roommate of Martinez tipped off police. According to investigators, when they caught up to Martinez, they discovered a plastic bag in his coat - with a human hand inside.
The remains were quickly identified as Portillos, and Martinez was quickly arrested. From that point, the case only grew darker.
Disturbing Evidence Emerges
Over the course of a 14-day trial, prosecutors presented testimony, digital forensics, and physical evidence to a jury that would ultimately find Martinez guilty of all charges, including first-degree murder, tampering with a deceased human body, and abuse of a corpse.
Some of the most unsettling revelations came from Martinez’s own cellphone. Photos and videos shown during the trial reportedly depicted the victim’s decapitated head.
In addition, DNA from both Portillos and Martinez was found on a condom recovered by investigators. Portillos’s DNA was also discovered in Martinez’s vehicle. Perhaps most damning, prosecutors said that Martinez confessed to the killing in recorded jailhouse calls to his mother.
A Bizarre Defense
Martinez took the stand during his trial, where he denied killing Portillos and instead claimed she had shot herself while under the influence of fentanyl. His defense attorneys echoed this theory, suggesting the prosecution failed to prove what had occurred prior to Martinez allegedly tampering with her body.
But the jury didn’t buy it. After just four hours of deliberation, they returned with a unanimous verdict: guilty on all counts. Martinez was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
In a press release, Pueblo County District Attorney Kala Beauvais said, “This verdict is a testament to the hard work and dedication of law enforcement, our prosecution team, and the community. The District Attorney’s Office remains committed to seeking justice for all victims and holding perpetrators accountable for their actions.”
Remembering Renee Portillos
For Portillos’s family, the verdict brought a measure of closure - but also sorrow. Her sister, Cathy Peralta, told the Pueblo Chieftain, “I cried, and he deserves life (in prison). He was an evil man, and hearing all the evidence, I couldn’t believe how sick and demented he is. It’s bittersweet, we can’t get her back. But we finally got justice. Now, what happens to him in prison, he made his bed and he can lie in it. Now my sister can rest.”
For a city grappling with its fourth homicide of the year, this conviction may mark the beginning of healing for a family - and a community - left stunned by a tragedy that defied comprehension.
