The Events Leading to the Murder

On May 11, 2022, Strickland and Wilson spent the evening together, swimming at Deep Eddy Pool and dining at a local bar. Strickland dropped Wilson off at her friend’s apartment around 8:30 p.m. Shortly after, a security camera captured footage of a black SUV, similar to Armstrong’s known vehicle, near the scene.

Wilson’s friend returned home later that night to find Wilson dead in the bathroom, surrounded by blood. Investigators discovered three bullet casings at the scene, matching the 9mm pistol Strickland had purchased for Armstrong. This, along with other evidence, led the police to consider Armstrong a prime suspect.

Armstrong’s Flight and Capture

After Wilson’s murder, Armstrong disappeared. She sold her vehicle and flew to New York City, eventually making her way to Costa Rica. She assumed multiple aliases and underwent cosmetic surgery to alter her appearance. Despite her efforts to evade capture, U.S. Marshals apprehended her in June 2022 at a hostel in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica.

Armstrong was extradited to Austin and placed in jail on charges of first-degree murder. In October 2023, she tried to escape police custody during a doctor’s appointment, running off for about 10 minutes before being captured and restrained by deputies. In November, she was convicted of murder and sentenced to 90 years in prison; she’ll be eligible for parole after 30 years. In May 2024, Wilson’s parents filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Armstrong seeking over $1 million in damages.
