The Murder of Cyclist Moriah Wilson
By Ashley S.. Oct 8, 2024
The murder of 25-year-old professional cyclist Moriah Wilson shocked the cycling community and drew attention to the circumstances of women giving birth in prison. Wilson, a rising star in gravel and mountain bike racing, was killed in May 2022 while visiting Austin, Texas, for a race. Her murder has sparked intense scrutiny, revealing a tangled web of relationships and jealousy.
A Rising Star Cut Short
Moriah Wilson, known as Mo, was an accomplished athlete, having dominated various gravel races and mountain bike events. Her dedication and passion for the sport were evident, and she had a bright future ahead. However, her promising career was brutally cut short on May 11, 2022, when she was found dead in a friend’s apartment in East Austin.
Wilson’s murder occurred just days before she was set to compete in the Gravel Locos race, where she was a favorite to win. The cycling community mourned her loss, and her family established a foundation in her honor to promote healthy living and support recreational and educational programs.
A Tangled Web
Wilson’s death has been linked to a complicated love triangle involving her, fellow cyclist Colin Strickland, and his girlfriend, Kaitlin Armstrong. Strickland and Wilson had a brief romantic relationship during a break in his relationship with Armstrong. Although Strickland and Wilson had resumed a platonic friendship, tensions remained.
Strickland, a well-known figure in the cycling world, introduced Wilson to the community and supported her career. Their professional relationship and brief romance seemed to have fueled Armstrong’s jealousy. Armstrong allegedly told a friend she wanted to kill Wilson, a statement that would later become a crucial piece of evidence in the investigation.
The Events Leading to the Murder
On May 11, 2022, Strickland and Wilson spent the evening together, swimming at Deep Eddy Pool and dining at a local bar. Strickland dropped Wilson off at her friend’s apartment around 8:30 p.m. Shortly after, a security camera captured footage of a black SUV, similar to Armstrong’s known vehicle, near the scene.
Wilson’s friend returned home later that night to find Wilson dead in the bathroom, surrounded by blood. Investigators discovered three bullet casings at the scene, matching the 9mm pistol Strickland had purchased for Armstrong. This, along with other evidence, led the police to consider Armstrong a prime suspect.
Armstrong’s Flight and Capture
After Wilson’s murder, Armstrong disappeared. She sold her vehicle and flew to New York City, eventually making her way to Costa Rica. She assumed multiple aliases and underwent cosmetic surgery to alter her appearance. Despite her efforts to evade capture, U.S. Marshals apprehended her in June 2022 at a hostel in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica.
Armstrong was extradited to Austin and placed in jail on charges of first-degree murder. In October 2023, she tried to escape police custody during a doctor’s appointment, running off for about 10 minutes before being captured and restrained by deputies. In November, she was convicted of murder and sentenced to 90 years in prison; she’ll be eligible for parole after 30 years. In May 2024, Wilson’s parents filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Armstrong seeking over $1 million in damages.
The tragic murder of Moriah Wilson underscores the dangers that can arise in personal relationships. Kaitlin Armstrong’s conviction serves as a sobering reminder of the far-reaching impacts of violence. As the cycling community and Wilson’s loved ones continue to grieve, this case highlights the importance of safety, mental health, and the profound consequences of our actions.
