Massachusetts ICE Arrest Sparks Chaos as Neighbors Clash With Agents

It started as an ordinary Thursday morning - birds chirping, lawnmowers humming, families out for walks. But on Eureka Street in Worcester, Massachusetts, that peaceful rhythm was shattered in a matter of moments. What followed was a chaotic and emotional scene involving federal agents, a determined group of neighbors, and a mother led away in handcuffs.

A Mother and a Crowd

Shortly after 11 a.m., neighbors spotted federal agents interacting with a Brazilian mother, her teenage daughter, and a newborn. The family, according to immigrant advocacy group LUCE, had been targeted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and the father had already been detained the previous day.

Word spread quickly. Residents poured into the street. About 25 people surrounded the agents, demanding to see a warrant. Some formed a human chain, others chanted, “Don’t take the mother!” according to Mother Jones.

Tensions escalated when the agents reportedly refused to produce any documentation.

According to officials, officers believed she might jump in front of it. She was arrested and later charged with reckless endangerment of a child, disturbing the peace, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest.

NBC footage captured a disturbing moment of officers forcefully taking the girl to the ground while she screamed. Police say the baby was unharmed.

A Candidate and Clashing Jurisdictions

Ashley Spring, a 38-year-old local school committee candidate, was also arrested after allegedly pushing officers and throwing an unknown liquid on them. She faces several charges, including assault and battery on a police officer and interfering with an arrest.

Spring’s arrest added another layer of complexity to the event. Her involvement highlights how deeply the issue of immigration enforcement resonates at the local level, especially in a city where nearly one in four residents is foreign-born.

The City Responds

The fallout was swift. Worcester Mayor Joseph Petty said, according to NBC News, he was “deeply disturbed” by the event, and added, “Simply put, we cannot have this happen in our community.”

City Manager Eric Batista also addressed the incident, noting that the city and its police department do not assist with ICE civil detainments, per state law, but cannot interfere either. He described the event as “harrowing,” according to Fox 13 News, and affirmed the city’s commitment to upholding public peace.

ICE declined to comment, and the identity and current location of the detained mother have not been disclosed.
