Shamra Felkel, 49, was last seen alive on Sept. 25, 2024, in the Hartsville area, with her absence reported by family and friends on Oct. 7. She sent a friend to check the area where the friend discovered human remains and called 911. Authorities later confirmed the remains as Felkel’s and ruled her death a homicide.

Darlington County Coroner J. Todd Hardee described the disturbing discovery: Felkel’s decomposed remains were found in a hollowed-out space beside an old, dry well. She had been buried for months, concealed in the remote location.

Suspect Charged in Grisly Murder

Daniel Peele was arrested on Dec. 9 and faces charges of murder, kidnapping, and obstruction of justice. According to investigators, Peele allegedly strangled Felkel in a violent altercation, then buried her near the well in an effort to cover up the crime. Peele remains in custody without bond at the W. Glenn Campbell Detention Center, with his arraignment set for Jan. 22.

A Family Shattered

Felkel’s loved ones have been left devastated by the tragic outcome. Her other daughter Karli Felkel shared her heartbreak on social media, calling the loss “a nightmare.” In an emotional Facebook post, Karli remembered her mother’s fiery personality, love for animals, and passion for the outdoors. “This has got to be the most traumatic thing me and my siblings have experienced,” she wrote.

While investigators continue to dig into the events leading to Felkel’s death, Peele’s connection to the victim remains unclear.
