A Los Angeles County mother and father were sentenced to 22 years to life in prison on April 2, 2026, for the torture and death of their 16-year-old daughter, Pearlene Valavala, in August 2021.
The sentence was handed down after a jury convicted both Oriana Elias and Vincent Gibbs of second-degree murder, torture, and felony child abuse.
"This sentence reflects an unthinkable betrayal by parents who are meant to protect their children from harm," Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said in a statement following sentencing.
According to prosecutors, Elias and Gibbs became enraged after discovering that Pearlene had been sending text messages to teenage boys.
As punishment, they forced her to perform strenuous outdoor exercises in the heat for an extended period. The physical punishment that followed lasted several hours, prosecutors said, and included being struck with a wooden plank and a belt.
Pearlene collapsed and died in a makeshift bathroom at the family's home. She was 16 years old.
Elias, Pearlene's mother, was convicted of second-degree murder, torture, child abuse, and two counts of dissuading a witness from reporting a crime. The jury found that she caused great bodily injury.
Gibbs, Pearlene's father, was convicted of second-degree murder, torture, and felony child abuse. The jury also found that he caused great bodily injury and used a weapon during the commission of the crime.
Both were sentenced to 22 years to life. The case was prosecuted by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.
The district attorney's office described the case as a profound failure of parental responsibility.
"Pearlene was denied the chance to grow up and become who she was meant to be," District Attorney Hochman said. "There is no punishment that can restore the loss of life."
Pearlene's death drew attention to the vulnerability of children in homes where abuse goes undetected and unreported. Advocates noted that the case underscored the importance of community awareness and mandatory reporting when warning signs of abuse are present.
The convictions and sentences were finalized in Los Angeles County Superior Court nearly five years after Pearlene's death in 2021.
The length of time between her death and the sentencing reflected the complexity of building a case involving multiple charges, multiple defendants, and allegations of witness intimidation.
Pearlene Valavala was remembered by those who spoke on her behalf during proceedings as a young woman who deserved far more than the life she was given at home.
The case remains one of the most severe parental abuse prosecutions in recent Los Angeles County history.
