Japan Airlines Flight Plunges 26,000 Feet
By Jessie Stone. Oct 21, 2025
A terrifying ordeal aboard a Japan Airlines flight left passengers clutching oxygen masks, scrawling farewell notes, and fearing the worst as their Boeing 737 plunged nearly 26,000 feet before making an emergency landing.
A Routine Flight Turns Harrowing
On June 30, Japan Airlines Flight 8696 departed Shanghai Pudong Airport bound for Tokyo Narita Airport with 191 passengers and crew. The flight, operated under a codeshare with low-cost subsidiary Spring Japan, was cruising at around 36,000 feet when disaster struck just before 7 p.m. local time.
A mechanical issue caused the plane to rapidly descend, dropping to just under 10,500 feet in less than 10 minutes, according to the Associated Press and Kyodo News.
Panic Sets In
Passengers described hearing a muffled boom before oxygen masks deployed and flight attendants shouted instructions to put them on. According to PEOPLE, the passenger told the AP, “I heard a muffled boom, and the oxygen mask fell off in a few seconds. The stewardess cried and shouted to put on the oxygen mask, saying the plane had a malfunction.”
Another recalled waking up to find oxygen masks dangling overhead, while a third admitted being on “the verge of tears,” according to PEOPLE, as they scribbled their will and jotted down their bank PINs and insurance details, fearing they might not survive.
Caught on Camera
Video footage from inside the cabin shows visibly shaken passengers wearing oxygen masks while a flight attendant delivers instructions over the intercom. Many clutched their masks tightly as the cabin descended into chaos.
The plane’s pressurization system triggered an alert, according to Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. The pilot declared an emergency and diverted the flight to Kansai International Airport in Osaka.
Safe Landing and Aftermath
Despite the fear and chaos, the plane landed safely in Osaka at about 8:50 p.m. local time. No injuries were reported among the passengers or crew.
Passengers were provided overnight accommodation and 15,000 yen (about $93) in transportation compensation.
Investigation Underway
An investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of the mechanical issue that led to the plane’s rapid descent. Japan Airlines and Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism had not issued official statements as of July 1.
A Broader Concern
The incident has renewed scrutiny on Boeing’s safety record, which has already been under intense examination following a series of crashes and near misses involving the manufacturer’s planes in recent months.
For passengers aboard Flight 8696, though, the memory of clutching a mask and penning final messages to loved ones at 36,000 feet is likely to linger long after the investigation ends.
