Richard Simmons Estate Fight Turns Ugly in Court

When Teresa Reveles found Richard Simmons unresponsive on the floor of his Los Angeles home last July, she couldn’t have known that the grief of that moment would soon spiral into a bitter legal fight. But just days after the fitness icon’s death, a trust dispute erupted, pitting Simmons’ longtime housekeeper and confidante against his surviving family members.

Now, months later, both sides remain locked in a legal standoff over who should control Simmons’ estate - and what, exactly, his final wishes were.

A Sudden Death and a Rapid Fallout

Richard Simmons, who had just turned 76, died on July 13, 2024, after falling in his home the night before. According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, the fall caused blunt traumatic injuries that were complicated by arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease - damage to the heart’s blood vessels.

It was Reveles, Simmons’ housekeeper and close friend of over three decades, who discovered his body the following morning. What unfolded next has become a deeply contested narrative. Reveles says she initially asked Simmons’ family to hold off on discussing legal matters until after the burial. The family, she claims, did not honor that request.

Claims of Coercion

At the heart of the conflict is Simmons’ trust. Reveles was named a co-trustee and a significant beneficiary in his estate documents. However, on July 18, just one day before Simmons’ burial, she was taken to a law firm by Leonard Simmons (Richard’s brother) and his wife Cathy.

There, according to her legal team, Reveles signed paperwork giving up her role as co-trustee while in a state of emotional vulnerability and without legal counsel present. English is not Reveles’ first language, and her attorneys argue she did not fully understand what she was signing.

Reveles contends that Leonard and Cathy Simmons pressured her into declining her duties with misleading claims. By July 26, her attorneys sent a formal notice indicating her desire to resume her co-trustee responsibilities. Yet according to court filings, those requests were ignored, and she was excluded from further estate decisions.

The Family’s Response

The Simmons family has aggressively pushed back on Reveles’ claims. In a statement to media outlets, family spokesperson Tom Estey accused her of acting out of “greed” and stated that her actions dishonor the legacy of someone she once called a friend, according to PEOPLE.

According to the family, Reveles made an informed decision to decline her role and remains a beneficiary regardless. They also claim she attempted to charge the estate for personal expenses while continuing to reside in Simmons’ home. One particularly pointed allegation is that Reveles is connected to a Netflix documentary project about Simmons - something the family fears could further tarnish his reputation.

A Question of Legacy

Reveles’ petition asks the court to formally reinstate her as co-trustee and to restrict Leonard Simmons from selling or profiting off Richard Simmons’ personal effects, name, or likeness until a ruling is made. For now, the estate is in limbo - its future shaped not by Simmons’ infectious energy or love for fitness, but by a courtroom struggle between those who claim to know what he would have wanted.

What remains undisputed is that Simmons left a legacy of positivity, flamboyance, and health advocacy. But as the court weighs competing narratives and allegations, it’s unclear whether that legacy will be preserved as he envisioned - or redefined in legal filings and public statements.
