Search for Missing Man Ends With Disturbing Crocodile Discovery

The search for missing Indigenous man Adam Yunkaporta in Far North Queensland, Australia, took a grim turn when human remains were discovered inside a crocodile. The 60-year-old vanished near a river, and authorities now believe he may have fallen victim to the massive reptile.

Crocodile Euthanized for Investigation

Yunkaporta, a First Nations man, was last seen around midday on Jan. 30, 2025, wearing black shorts and a blue fishing shirt featuring a barramundi design. He was reportedly heading toward the Ward, Watson, and Archer Rivers for a fishing trip but never returned. Concerned for his safety, his family reported him missing the following day, prompting a search in the remote waterways of Aurukun.

Authorities concentrated their search along the Watson River, where they encountered a 4.7-meter, or 15-foot, crocodile on Feb. 7. Suspecting it may be connected to Yunkaporta’s disappearance, wildlife officers euthanized the reptile for further examination. A necropsy later confirmed the presence of human remains inside its stomach. “Forensic testing was carried out this morning, and human remains were located within the crocodile,” Queensland Police confirmed, according to NewsWire. While forensic testing is still ongoing to formally identify the remains, Yunkaporta’s family has been notified of the discovery.

Crocodile Attacks a Growing Concern

The investigation remains active as authorities work to confirm whether the remains belong to Yunkaporta or another potential victim. Crocodile attacks, though rare, have been an increasing concern in Queensland. Since 2020, the Queensland Government has recorded four fatal crocodile attacks and nine non-fatal incidents.
