Senator's Son Sentenced After Tragic Death of North Dakota Deputy

A devastating car crash in December 2023, which claimed the life of Mercer County Sheriff’s Deputy Paul Martin, 53, has resulted in a 28-year prison sentence for Ian Cramer, the 43-year-old son of North Dakota Senator Kevin Cramer. A Fatal Chase

On Dec. 6, 2023, Ian Cramer, who had been exhibiting severe mental health symptoms, was taken to Sanford Hospital in Bismarck by his mother, Kris Cramer. While parked at the hospital’s ambulance bay, Ian allegedly climbed into the driver’s seat of the family’s car, rammed through the bay doors, and fled the scene.

Authorities tracked Ian’s location through a cell phone, leading to a high-speed chase across Mercer County. Despite two flat tires from spike strips, Ian reached speeds of over 100 mph. The pursuit ended tragically when Ian struck Martin’s patrol car head-on, propelling the deputy over 100 feet. Martin, who had been deploying a tire-deflation device and was standing near his vehicle, was pronounced dead shortly after the crash.

Sentencing and Apologies

Ian Cramer was sentenced on Dec. 30, 2024, to 38 years in prison, with 10 years suspended and credit for time already served. The sentence includes three years of probation and recommended treatment for addiction and mental health issues.

At the sentencing, Ian expressed remorse, saying to Martin’s family, “I had no intention to do any of this. It was an accident, and I just hope that someday they can forgive me, and I think the best thing for me is to go to a hospital and just get more help,” according to CNN.

Ian had admitted to using methamphetamine and bath salts on the day of the crash, which he said exacerbated his long-standing mental health issues.
