A chilling case out of Long Beach Island, New Jersey, shocked the nation in 2021 when an 87-year-old man and his girlfriend were brutally murdered in their $1.7 million waterfront home. The perpetrator? His own daughter, enraged over a dispute surrounding his will and estate.
Family Drama Turns Deadly
John Enders, 87, and his longtime partner Francoise Pitoy, 75, appeared to be enjoying a peaceful life on the Jersey Shore. However, a storm of resentment was brewing within Enders’ daughter, Sherry Lee Heffernan. After learning she had been cut out of her father’s will and angered by his plans to sell his six-bedroom Barnegat Bay estate, Heffernan’s simmering rage led to a shocking act of violence.
On Sept. 29, 2021, Heffernan traveled from her home in Pennsylvania to Long Beach Island, determined to confront her father and his partner. She entered the home and brutally attacked the couple. Both of them suffered gunshot wounds to the jaw at point-blank range, Enders was stabbed 51 times, while Pitoy was stabbed 39 times. The crime’s severity sent shockwaves through the close-knit community and left investigators uncovering a chilling trail of evidence.
The bodies of Enders and Pitoy were discovered on Oct. 3, 2021, after concerned family members requested a welfare check when calls to Pitoy went unanswered. Police arriving at the scene encountered a grisly tableau, exposing the extent of the violence that had unfolded.
A Greedy Motive Unveiled
The motive for these grisly murders stemmed from years of family tension and financial disputes. Heffernan and her sister had recently been removed from their father’s will, according to an affidavit written by Surf City Police Detective Sgt. Victor Rice, NJ.com reported. Enders reportedly argued frequently with Heffernan and was estranged from her sister, according to interviews with relatives and neighbors.
Adding to the conflict, Enders refused to allow Heffernan, a realtor, to list his six-bedroom Barnegat Bay home for sale, which was on the market under contract for $1,935,000. Heffernan, convinced she deserved a share of his estate, lashed out when she discovered that Enders had left his entire estate to her nephew, Andrew Vero, further fueling her rage. The property eventually sold for $1.7 million in January 2022.

Among the key evidence presented during the trial were three of Heffernan’s footprints found in blood-stained areas of the kitchen floor. Prosecutors also tracked her Winnebago’s movements as it traveled from her home in Pennsylvania to Surf City in the early hours of Sept. 29, 2021, and back later that day. Cell phone records further corroborated her route, placing her at the scene during the time of the murders.
Sentenced to Life Without Parole
In 2024, Heffernan was convicted on murder and weapon charges, sealing her fate. She received two life sentences, totaling approximately 63 years and nine months, without the possibility of parole. The judge described the crime as “committed with extreme depravity,” as reported by PEOPLE. During sentencing, members of the victims’ families shared emotional statements, highlighting the devastating impact of the murders on their lives and the entire community.
The case serves as a grim reminder of how family disputes and greed can escalate into unthinkable acts of violence. For the residents of Long Beach Island, the memories of this tragedy linger, casting a shadow over the otherwise serene coastal town.
