A Waukegan, Illinois, man is facing serious charges after the body of a missing woman was discovered in a plastic storage container in his backyard - nearly two months after she vanished. The timeline and details behind what happened have left both investigators and the public stunned.
She Was Missing for Weeks
Megan Bos, 37, was reported missing on March 9, 2025. She had last been seen in mid-February. After weeks with no leads, detectives located her remains on April 10 at a residence in Waukegan, Illinois, in a large storage container behind the home of Jose Luis Mendoza-Gonzalez, 52.
How the Truth Unfolded
On the morning of April 10, detectives from Antioch tracked down Jose Luis Mendoza-Gonzalez at a business in Waukegan. Mendoza-Gonzalez, who had been in frequent contact with Megan Bos prior to her disappearance, was identified as a person of interest in the case. Due to a language barrier, the interview was conducted with the assistance of a Spanish translator.
During the initial conversation, Mendoza-Gonzalez stated that Bos had visited his residence on Feb. 19 but claimed she left shortly after. When investigators pressed for details about her current location and whether she was still alive, Mendoza-Gonzalez abruptly expressed concern about being arrested on the spot, though he did not clarify why.
The interview was moved to the Waukegan Police Department, where Mendoza-Gonzalez ultimately admitted that Bos had died at his home. According to his statement, she had come over on Feb. 19 and snorted an unknown substance. At her request, she went to the basement while he worked on a plumbing issue elsewhere in the house. When he returned, he found her unresponsive and believed she had overdosed.
A Shocking Decision
Fearing legal repercussions, Mendoza-Gonzalez left Bos’ body in the basement for several days before transferring it to a storage container in his backyard. That same night, he admitted to destroying her phone and throwing it in the trash. Nearly two months later, authorities would uncover her remains in that very container.
Criminal Charges Filed
Mendoza-Gonzalez has been charged with concealment of a death, abuse of a corpse, and obstruction of justice. Despite the nature of the case, he was released on Level 4 pre-trial monitoring. Authorities cited his lack of prior criminal history as a factor in the decision.
Awaiting Answers
An autopsy showed no signs of trauma or foul play on Bos’ body. The Lake County Coroner’s Office is awaiting toxicology results to determine the official cause of death. Investigators have not confirmed whether the drugs she took were illicit or prescribed. The investigation remains active, with law enforcement continuing to piece together the final hours of Megan Bos’ life.
