Texas Woman 'Marries' Ex Without Him Knowing
By Jessie Stone. Jul 3, 2025
A Bath & Body Works gift bag, a photo, and a marriage certificate - what seemed like a thoughtful gesture turned into something far more alarming for one Texas man.
A Surprise Package With an Unexpected Message
On the evening of June 13, a 42-year-old man in Beverly Hills, Texas, came home to find a gift left on his doorstep. Inside the bag, nestled among scented bath products, was a photo of his ex-girlfriend smiling while holding a marriage certificate. Alongside it, an official-looking document claiming the two were legally wed - and a tag reading, “Congrats, maybe call your wife,” as reported by USA Today.
That man had broken up with Kristin Marie Spearman, 36, just days earlier.
What Police Say Happened
According to investigators, Spearman and the man had applied for a marriage license in early June. But after an argument, he ended the relationship and cut off contact. Police say Spearman didn’t let that stop her.
She allegedly persuaded a local reverend, identified in reports as Lavontis Willis, to officiate a wedding ceremony without the groom’s knowledge or presence.
Then, she filed the paperwork with the McLennan County Clerk’s Office, making it appear that the marriage was legitimate. Police now believe the entire ceremony was conducted under false pretenses. The reverend, who has not been charged, told authorities he was misled by Spearman and is cooperating fully with the investigation.
A Legal Gray Area and an Emotional Fallout
The situation has left more questions than answers - particularly about how a legal marriage could be certified without one party’s consent. Marriage law in Texas requires both parties to be present for a ceremony, but police say Spearman found a way to sidestep that requirement by manipulating the officiant.
After the incident, she was arrested at her home near Hewitt, Texas, and charged with third-degree felony stalking. Authorities say she is also subject to an emergency protective order and has been released on bond.
While the reverend expressed remorse, Spearman has not commented publicly. As of this writing, it’s unclear whether she has retained legal representation.
A Community Shaken and Legal Ramifications Pending
Police Chief Kory Martin confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and more charges could be considered. “Making sure this situation does not escalate has been a primary focus,” Martin said in a statement reported by USA Today.
The bizarre nature of the case has sparked curiosity and concern among locals and legal experts alike. Filing false documents with a government office carries serious consequences, and this case raises broader concerns about how personal relationships and legal systems can collide in unexpected and unsettling ways.
