A courtroom drama that captivated the nation is now the subject of a “Dateline NBC” special that premiered Friday, Nov. 15, 2024. Ashley Benefield, a graceful and ambitious 29-year-old ballerina, had all the makings of a star. On Sept. 27, 2020, Doug Benefield, 59, was found shot to death in the quiet neighborhood of Lakewood Ranch, Florida. The shooter? His estranged wife, Ashley.

Ashley claimed she fired in self-defense, alleging years of abuse at Doug’s hands. But as investigators dug deeper, they unearthed conflicting accounts of their relationship, sparking heated debates over who was telling the truth.

Doug’s brother, David Benefield, painted a vastly different picture of his late sibling, describing Doug as a “friend to everybody,” according to NBC.

A Case of Complexity

The case presented a tangled web of love, power, and allegations of domestic violence. Correspondent Andrea Canning noted the challenge of unraveling such complexities, saying, “Some believe Ashley was abused, and some believe she made it up for her defense,” according to NBC.

“The most surprising moment was the verdict,” said Canning, according to NBC. “It was a trial that many felt could have gone any way. Guilty, not guilty, hung … nothing would have surprised me.”

While the trial brought closure for some, it also left lingering questions about the couple’s ill-fated romance. Canning hopes the “Deadly Dance” episode serves as a lesson to others. According to NBC, she reflected, “The takeaway from this episode is that some relationships perhaps need more time to grow before a couple jumps into marriage.”
