Tri-State Tornado

The Tri-State Tornado of March 18, 1925, remains the deadliest tornado in U.S. history. It tore through Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana, officially killing 695 people and injuring over 2,000, though newspapers at the time sensationalized the tragedy, as seen in the photo above. This F5 tornado traveled an unprecedented 219 miles and had estimated winds of over 300 mph, leaving a path of destruction that obliterated entire towns and caused widespread devastation.

Daulatpur-Saturia Tornado

On April 26, 1989, the Daulatpur-Saturia Tornado struck the Dhaka region of Bangladesh, resulting in approximately 1,300 fatalities. This tornado, about a mile wide, devastated 20 villages and left 80,000 people homeless. The high death toll was exacerbated by poor construction standards and dense population in the affected areas.

Great Natchez Tornado

The Great Natchez Tornado struck Natchez, Mississippi, on May 7, 1840. It is the only major U.S. tornado to have killed more people than it injured, with at least 317 fatalities. The majority of the deaths occurred on flatboats on the Mississippi River, and the tornado caused massive destruction to plantations and homes along its path.

St. Louis-East St. Louis Tornado

Hitting on May 27, 1896, the St. Louis-East St. Louis Tornado is one of the deadliest in U.S. history, claiming at least 255 lives. This F4 tornado caused extensive damage to buildings and infrastructure in both St. Louis, Missouri, and East St. Louis, Illinois, and remains a significant event in the region’s history.

Sicily Tornado

Tornadoes are exceedingly rare in Italy, typically occurring on a small scale with minimal damage. However, in late November or early December of 1851, Sicily experienced a catastrophic event when two tornadoes formed from waterspouts. These tornadoes devastated the region, particularly the town of Castellamare, where half the town was destroyed, and 200 residents lost their lives. The total death toll is estimated to be around 500, making it the second deadliest tornado in European history.

The Tupelo Tornado

On April 5, 1936, a devastating tornado hit Tupelo, Mississippi, resulting in the deaths of 233 people. Among the survivors were a young Elvis Presley and his mother. At the time, official records did not account for Black victims, and the tornado caused significant damage in Black neighborhoods, suggesting the actual death toll was likely higher. The tornado destroyed 48 city blocks. Many buildings collapsed and caught fire, which could have increased the death toll even further.
