'Toolbox Murders': Beaten, Bound, and Drowned Alive
By Emmanuel Tredway. Jul 11, 2025
It began like something out of a horror movie - a missing persons report, a metal toolbox, and a murky creek. But what unfolded in Queensland in early 2016 wasn’t fiction. It was the brutal and deeply unsettling reality of the deaths of Cory Breton and Iuliana Triscaru. Nearly a decade later, the full truth has finally come to light - and it’s left two families forever changed.
A Plan in Motion
In January 2016, Breton and Triscaru vanished after being lured to a unit in Kingston, just south of Brisbane. Prosecutors said the two victims were targeted over an alleged drug-related dispute. What happened inside that apartment was nothing short of torture. According to trial records, the pair were beaten, restrained with tape and zip ties, and stuffed into a two-meter metal toolbox.
Then, the box was loaded into the back of a utility vehicle, driven to Scrubby Creek in Logan, and submerged under water with concrete and tires to weigh it down. Authorities believe Breton and Triscaru were still alive when the toolbox sank. They died by drowning.
A Gruesome Discovery
Two weeks later, police pulled the toolbox from the creek. Inside, they found the badly decomposed bodies of the victims. The scene was described in court as horrifying. The retrial judge would later say the hours leading up to their deaths were likely filled with “immense terror,” according to the Australian Broadcasting Company.
Trials, Retrials, and Sentencing
In 2021, three men - Trent Thrupp, Stou Daniels, and Davy Taiao - were convicted of murder and torture and sentenced to life in prison. However, the Queensland Court of Appeal later overturned the murder convictions and granted them a retrial, while upholding the torture charges.
In June 2025, a second jury once again found the trio guilty of murder. Under Queensland law, the mandatory life sentences come with no chance of parole for 30 years due to the dual homicide convictions. Another participant, Tuhirangi-Thomas Tahiata, who drove the toolbox to the creek, was also sentenced to life in prison.
In total, eight individuals faced charges related to the case. While some received reduced manslaughter sentences, the three main defendants now face decades behind bars.
The Aftermath for Loved Ones
The emotional toll has been enormous. Iuliana Triscaru’s family said the retrial forced them to relive the ordeal, calling it a “fresh agony” that compounded their grief, according to the ABC.
Breton’s daughter, who was just 3 years old at the time, shared a heartbreaking statement in court, saying that she looks at photographs to try to remember him, “But no matter how hard I try, I can’t. I was too young when he died. All I knew was that he was gone and never coming back along with my memories,” according to the ABC.
A Legacy of Pain - and Justice
The “toolbox murders” have become one of Queensland’s most disturbing cases. It wasn’t just the violence - it was the calculated cruelty, the involvement of multiple people, and the long path to justice. And while the legal process has finally ended for most of those involved, the families of Cory Breton and Iuliana Triscaru continue to live with the echoes of that night.
