Top 9 Safest US States for Drivers
By Maria W.. Dec 7, 2025
Motor vehicle accidents are on the rise, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. For staying safe on the road, some states offer better odds than others. Here are the top nine safest states for drivers, according to Forbes Advisor.
#1. New Jersey
New Jersey is the safest state for drivers in the U.S. The Garden State boasts fewer fatal accidents from speeding and impaired driving. New Jersey’s strict laws for new drivers contribute to the state’s high safety ratings.
#2. Nebraska
In 2023, speeding caused 16% of fatal crashes in Nebraska, the lowest rate in the U.S.

#3. Maine
Fatal crashes per capita decreased by 7% in the Pine Tree State in 2023.
#4. Rhode Island
While Rhode Island experienced an increase in fatal crashes in 2023, the 13th state still holds the #4 spot in driving safety.
#5. Utah
Utah’s deadly crash rate dropped 20% in 2020, and even though rates have increased since then, the state keeps one of the lowest crash rates in the nation.
#6. Massachusetts
The Bay State once topped the list for driver safety, but a recent crash increase pushed Massachusetts to the No. 6 spot.
#7. Minnesota
Minnesota’s traffic fatalities dropped 7% in 2023. In fact, the state’s highway death rate has fallen by 90% since 1961.
#8. New York
The first state to ban cell phone use while driving, New York is still working to reduce rates of fatalities from distracted driving.

#9. Maryland
In light of Maryland’s recent increase in traffic deaths, the state expanded its Move Over Law, which requires drivers to change lanes or slow down when approaching a stopped or parked vehicle.
These states stand out for their track records in driver safety. Effective laws, well-maintained infrastructure and other factors help decrease the likelihood of accidents.
