TSA Busts Man With Reptile in His Pants
By Jennifer A.. Apr 16, 2025
Security lines can bring out the worst in people - but one traveler at Newark Liberty International Airport took things to a whole new level. On March 7, 2025, TSA officers stopped a man from East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, who tried to sneak a live turtle through security - stuffed down the front of his pants!
The Shell Shocker at Newark Airport
A body scanner flagged something suspicious in the man’s groin area. When officers stepped in for a pat-down, the man reached into his pants and pulled out a red-eared slider turtle, swaddled in a small blue towel. According to the Transportation Security Administration, the reptile measured about five inches long and somehow survived the bizarre smuggling attempt without injury.
TSA officials said the incident marked a first. “We have seen travelers try to conceal knives and other weapons on their person, in their shoes and in their luggage, however I believe this is the first time we have come across someone who was concealing a live animal down the front of his pants,” said Thomas Carter, TSA’s Federal Security Director for New Jersey, as reported by CBS News.
A Species Known for Trouble
While red-eared sliders look like harmless pets, they’re one of the most invasive turtle species in the world. Native to the Mississippi River region, they’ve made their way into ecosystems across the globe - often dumped by overwhelmed pet owners. These turtles can live for decades, grow up to 11 inches long, and outcompete native wildlife for food, basking space, and resources.
Airport authorities confiscated the turtle on the spot. “Port Authority Police questioned the man, took possession of the turtle and indicated that they would contact the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and local animal control officials,” TSA said, according to ABC News. The man missed his flight and left the checkpoint with an escort from law enforcement. No charges have been announced so far.
Not the First Wild Encounter
This isn’t the TSA’s first run-in with surprise critters. In 2024, officers stopped a traveler carrying a bag of snakes. And in 2023, Miami airport officials discovered live Amazon parrot eggs and birds after hearing chirping coming from a duffel bag. But even among TSA’s strangest finds, a turtle in the trousers earns its place near the top.
Carter praised the officer who handled the situation with care. “I commend our officer who conducted the pat-down in a very professional manner in an effort to resolve the alarm,” he said, as reported by ABC News. “As best as we could tell, the turtle was not harmed by the man’s actions.”

Moral of the Story? Don’t ‘Shell’-fishly Smuggle
Whether driven by attachment, confusion, or sheer oddity, the man’s turtle tactic raised eyebrows and questions. TSA reminded travelers to check guidelines before flying with animals - and maybe, just maybe, reconsider using their pants as carry-on storage.
