UVA Student's Remains Found on Abandoned Property
By Rosa L.. Jul 25, 2024
Hannah Graham, a lively and ambitious second-year student at the University of Virginia, mysteriously vanished on Sept. 13, 2014.
The 18-year-old sophomore, described as full of promise and potential, disappeared after spending a night with friends in Charlottesville, Virginia. Her sudden disappearance triggered an extensive search effort. The crime unearthed a harrowing truth that had a lasting impact on the UVA community.

A Regular Night Out
On Sept. 12, Graham attended an off-campus party. Later that evening, witnesses placed her in the Downtown Mall area around 1:20 a.m.
Text messages to friends revealed she was lost and attempting to find her way back to her dorm. The last confirmed sighting of Hannah was in Downtown Mall and then in a dark parking lot with a strange man.
The UVA Community Rallies
The following days were a whirlwind of frantic searching. University officials and volunteers scoured the Charlottesville area, plastering missing person posters everywhere. Social media became a beacon of hope, with #FindHannahGraham trending nationwide. Days turned into weeks, and the agonizing wait for answers intensified.
Hannah’s parents, Sue and John Graham, pleaded for help at a press conference. “This is every parent’s worst nightmare. I am certain that everybody knows that what happened to Hannah could happen to their child,” Hannah’s father, John Graham, addressed reporters at a press conference, according to CBS News. “Please, please help us.”
A Grim Discovery
On Oct. 19, 2014, a heartbreaking development emerged. Human remains were found on an abandoned property in Albemarle County. Dental records tragically confirmed the remains belonged to Hannah Graham, and her cause of death was ruled homicide.

Unmasking a Monster
The investigation shifted focus, determined to find Hannah’s killer. Jesse Matthew Jr., a 32-year-old former hospital orderly, emerged as a suspect. DNA evidence linked him to Graham, and a witness account placed him with Hannah on the night of her disappearance. Matthew was already facing charges of abduction and sexual assault in an unrelated case. Jesse Matthew Jr. was well known in the area, as he grew up in Charlottesville.
Arrest in Texas
Authorities launched a nationwide search for Matthew. Six days after Hannah’s remains were found, a U.S. Marshal spotted Matthew at a bus stop in Galveston, Texas. He was apprehended without incident.
Justice Served, But a Life Lost
In March 2016, facing the death penalty, Matthew took a plea deal. He admitted to abducting and murdering Hannah Graham, as well as another young woman, Morgan Harrington. He was sentenced to four consecutive life terms, ensuring he would never be free again.
Legacy of Light
Hannah Graham’s light may have been extinguished too soon, but her legacy lives on. Her family established the Hannah Graham Foundation, which works to prevent violence against women and empower young people. Hannah’s story continues to raise awareness, promote safety, and honor the memory of a bright young woman who was taken far too soon.
