Warning: These SUVs Could Catch Fire
By Gary P.. Apr 16, 2025
Volkswagen® is recalling more than 191,000 vehicles over concerns that improperly installed engine covers could pose a fire hazard, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Which Vehicles Are Affected?
The recall primarily affects 2024-2025 Volkswagen Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport models, popular SUVs known for their spacious interiors and modern features. The issue? The engine covers may not be securely attached, potentially coming loose and making contact with hot engine parts - which could cause a fire.

The recall includes:
• 115,310 Volkswagen Atlas SUVs built between June 16, 2023 – Dec. 12, 2024
• 62,183 Atlas Cross Sport SUVs built between June 16, 2023 – Dec. 9, 2024.
Volkswagen stated that the problem stems from incorrect installation and warned that a loose engine cover could touch hot engine components. “A loose engine cover that contacts hot surfaces in the engine compartment can melt, increasing the risk of a fire,” the recall says, according to Top Class Actions.
What Is Volkswagen Doing About It?
To address the issue, Volkswagen is offering free repairs to affected vehicle owners. The company has instructed dealerships to remove the engine covers altogether to eliminate the risk.
Volkswagen will begin mailing official recall notices by April 18, 2025. These letters will contain step-by-step instructions for owners to schedule a free inspection and repair at their nearest dealership.
How to Check If Your Car Is Affected
Volkswagen owners can verify if their vehicle is included in the recall by:
• Visiting Volkswagen’s official website and entering their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
• Checking the NHTSA recall website at nhtsa.gov/recalls
• Calling Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298

What Should You Do If Your Car Is Affected?
• Watch for Your Recall Notice: Volkswagen will notify owners by mail starting April 18, 2025.
• Schedule a Repair: Contact your local Volkswagen dealership to arrange the necessary service.
• Stay Alert: If you smell burning or notice unusual noises from your engine, stop driving and contact Volkswagen immediately.
More Volkswagen Recalls
This is just one of several recent recalls issued by Volkswagen. The automaker has also recalled 13,769 Audi Q4 E-Tron SUVs, Q4 E-Tron Sportbacks, and ID.4 models due to onboard charger failures that could cause loss of drive power.

Car recalls may seem inconvenient, but they are crucial for preventing accidents and ensuring vehicle safety. If you own one of the affected VW models, don't ignore this recall - schedule your repair as soon as possible.
