Drunken Cruise Dad Dies in Shipboard Detention
By Melissa M.. Jan 30, 2025
What was meant to be a relaxing cruise to Mexico turned into a nightmare aboard Royal Caribbean’s Navigator of the Seas® when 35-year-old Michael Virgil died just an hour after being detained by ship security. The Dec. 13, 2024, incident has sparked questions and controversy about the circumstances leading to Virgil’s death.
A Night of Disturbance
Virgil was reportedly traveling with his fiancée, 7-year-old son, and other family members when the trip took a dark turn. According to fellow passengers, Virgil’s behavior became increasingly erratic. He allegedly chased crew members and passengers down a hallway, shouting threats and racial slurs.
“The gentlemen that was drunk said he was going to kill us,” passenger Christifer Mikhail told Fox 11 Los Angeles. Mikhail described how Virgil chased him and a crew member, forcing the latter to lock himself in a towel room to escape. “I was kind of scared … I’m stuck in this hallway,” Mikhail added.
In a video captured by Mikhail, Virgil can be seen attempting to kick down a door while yelling threats. Witnesses also reported that he physically attacked two crew members during his rampage.
Security Intervention
Ship security intervened to detain Virgil, reportedly using pepper spray, handcuffs, zip ties, and towels to subdue him. It was also reported that a sedative may have been administered to calm him, though this detail has not been confirmed by Royal Caribbean.
Within an hour of his detention, Virgil was pronounced dead. His cause of death remains under investigation, and an autopsy report has not yet been released.
Unanswered Questions
Virgil’s family expressed disbelief over the incident, describing his behavior on the cruise as highly uncharacteristic. “He didn’t deserve to die over it,” a relative told Fox 11 Los Angeles.
Royal Caribbean released a statement following the tragedy: “We are saddened by the passing of one of our guests. We offered support to the family and are working with authorities on their investigation,” they said, according to The Independent.
The ship, which departed from Los Angeles and was en route to Ensenada, Mexico, continued its journey after the incident.

Controversy Over Security Measures
The use of force by ship security has raised questions about protocols for handling disruptive passengers. Some passengers and commentators have criticized the potential use of a sedative without knowledge of Virgil’s medical history, while others argued that security had no choice but to act in defense of crew and passengers.
As investigations continue, the incident serves as a somber reminder of the challenges in maintaining safety on large cruise ships, where isolation at sea leaves security teams to make critical decisions under pressure.
