Why a Stranger's Tattoos Led to a Fatal Fight
By Jennifer A.. Jul 17, 2025
What started as a judgmental comment in a wine bar ended with a man dead and a family shattered. In a bizarre clash of beliefs and bravado, a 65-year-old Wisconsin man punched a stranger over his tattoos - an act that spiraled into a fatal confrontation and a courtroom reckoning.
A Random Encounter Turns Deadly
Josh Davies, 39, walked into Tabi’s Wine Bar in Hartland, Wisconsin, on June 17, 2023, just looking to enjoy his evening. Kevin Sehmer, a man more than two decades his senior, confronted him. Sehmer took issue with Davies’ tattoos, calling them sinful and disrespectful. Witnesses said Sehmer accused Davies of defacing “God’s work,” a line echoed in the criminal complaint, according to The Kansas City Star.
Moments later, outside the bar, Davies hit the ground - his skull fractured and brain bleeding. According to prosecutors, Sehmer struck him with enough force to send him backward onto the pavement. Davies never recovered. He died nearly a month later in the hospital.
The Case Against Kevin Sehmer
Police arrested Sehmer at the scene. He initially denied throwing a punch, later telling investigators he had “violently pushed” Davies, according to FOX6 News. At trial, his defense argued self-defense, claiming Davies lunged at him with a metal stool. Jurors heard four conflicting accounts from witnesses and watched security footage that raised more questions than answers. But medical testimony sealed it.
“Remember how she described the level of force – the acceleration – that would have had to have occurred, in order for Josh to have the injuries that he did,” said District Attorney Sue Opper during closing arguments, as reported by FOX6 News.
A Waukesha County jury found Sehmer guilty of felony murder on Aug. 1, 2024.
A Sentence That Fell Short
On Sept. 6, 2024, a judge sentenced Sehmer to seven years in prison and five years of extended supervision. He received credit for 423 days already served. The Davies family, who hoped for 15 years behind bars, left court disappointed.
“You picked on the wrong guy when you picked on Josh, he was one of the good guys,” said Davies’ mother, Patti Pearson, according to FOX6 News.
Mourning a Man Who Made People Laugh
Josh Davies wasn’t looking for a fight. Friends described him as joyful, kind, and full of life. His widow, Jennifer Davies, told the court, “I never imagined I’d be in a courtroom addressing the death of my husband,” as reported by FOX6 News.
To honor his memory, his family installed a bench on his favorite disc golf course in Hartland - a small tribute to a life cut short by senseless violence.
One Punch, Lifelong Consequences
Sehmer said he didn’t know what triggered him that night. But his single act of aggression left an irreplaceable void. One comment about inked skin. One strike. One man dead.
As the Davies family tries to pick up the pieces, the question lingers: How does a moment of misplaced outrage end in tragedy - and why does justice so often fall short?
