Missing 24-Year-Old Discovered in Michigan Woods
By Dana Whitfield. Feb 28, 2026
A 24-year-old Wisconsin woman who sparked days of community-led searches was found dead in Michigan, and her boyfriend was arrested the same day in Minnesota.
Gabriella Cartagena was reported missing from Marinette, Wisconsin, on Feb. 6, 2026, according to KARE 11 and People. Within hours, neighbors and friends began organizing search efforts through social media, hoping to bring her home safely.
Five days later, on Feb. 10, authorities located her body in a wooded area in Menominee County, Michigan.
Arrest Across State Lines
At the same time Cartagena’s body was discovered, law enforcement officers in Wright County, Minnesota arrested her boyfriend in connection with her death, KARE 11 reported.
Authorities have not released full details of the allegations in all reporting, and at the time of publication, the boyfriend’s name had not been fully identified across outlets.
During a press conference, officials confirmed that an arrest had been made and that an autopsy was scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.
Investigators have not publicly discussed a possible motive.
Under U.S. law, the suspect is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
A Community That Refused to Stay Silent
When Cartagena was first reported missing, Marinette residents quickly mobilized.
Social media posts circulated her photograph. Volunteers organized search parties. Flyers were shared across Wisconsin and into neighboring states.
For several days, hope carried the effort.
Friends described her as someone known in the community, and many believed that collective action could help bring her back safely.
Instead, the discovery in a wooded area across the state line brought the search to a devastating end.
Multi-State Investigation
The case now spans at least three states: Wisconsin, where Cartagena was reported missing; Michigan, where her body was found; and Minnesota, where her boyfriend was arrested.
Multi-state investigations often involve coordination between local law enforcement agencies, state police, and prosecutors to determine jurisdiction and next legal steps.
Authorities have not yet detailed where charges will ultimately be filed.
An autopsy will provide additional clarity about how Cartagena died, investigators said.
Grief After Hope
For the Marinette community, the outcome is especially painful because so many residents had invested time and energy into finding her alive.
What began as urgent posts and neighborhood searches has turned into candlelight vigils and mourning.
Cartagena was 24 years old.
Her death now shifts from a missing persons case to a homicide investigation, with court proceedings expected to follow.
As law enforcement agencies continue their work, the town that rallied around her disappearance is left grappling with the reality that the search they launched in hope has ended in heartbreak.
