FBI Investigating After Woman Dies Aboard Carnival Cruise

A woman died Monday after falling from the balcony of her stateroom aboard the Carnival Firenze, a cruise ship traveling near the Southern California coast, according to authorities. The FBI has confirmed it is investigating her death, and the cause of the fall has not been determined.

The Carnival Firenze departed Long Beach on a four-night cruise bound for Catalina Island and Ensenada, Mexico. The incident occurred before the ship reached Catalina Island. The woman, whose identity has not been publicly released, fell from her stateroom balcony and landed on a deck below.

Family Alerted the Crew

The woman was traveling with family members, who alerted the ship’s crew to the incident, according to Carnival. Law enforcement officers boarded the vessel while it was docked at Catalina Island. The FBI confirmed to NBC News that it is assisting with the investigation - standard procedure for deaths that occur aboard cruise ships in U.S. coastal waters.

Carnival spokesperson Julie Leonardi said in a statement that “all appropriate authorities have been alerted” and that the company’s Care Team is supporting the guest’s family. The family has since disembarked and returned home.

What Witnesses Observed

A fellow passenger, Amber Reinhold, told NBC Los Angeles that crew members provided limited information to those on board. She said she was told by staff that a young woman traveling with her family had fallen from her balcony. Reinhold added that, based on the railing height she observed, a person would have had to be positioned above the railing for a fall to occur - though authorities have not confirmed the specific circumstances of how the woman went over.

The cause of the fall remains under active investigation. Carnival has not publicly speculated on what occurred.
